Configuring Web Content Filtering

670 views 1 29/01/2021 Garry Wootton

A great feature of all Peplink routers is the Web Content Filtering , either basic or enhanced (depending on the model). The filtering works with both in warranty and out of warranty devices, and the Web Blocking list may be updated manually or automatically from public lists. In addition to category selection, individual domains may be blacklisted or whitelisted. Certain User Groups may be exempted from the filtering if required.

Can’t I just use my firewall ?

Conventional firewalls, including those built into Peplink appliances, block websites based on IP addresses, protocols, and port numbers, not website URLs, typically at OSI Layers 3 and 4 (network and transport). If you try to block a website using an IP address in the firewall, the site may still become accessible as IP’s can be changed or added over time. This is where Web Content filtering gets really useful, it’s a great tool that works alongside your firewall however at the higher Application Layer using different techniques such as URL inspection.

Basic All MAX, Surf, MediaFast, Balance models
EnhancedBalance: 305, 380, 580, 710, 1350, 2500, EPX, MediaFast: 500, 750

Configuring the Filters

In the router’s web admin, browse to Advanced>Firewall>Content Blocking

Finally, save changes.
